The Pigs public house in North Norfolk was originally known as The Three Pigs. The building dates back to the 17th century and stands beside the B1149 Holt to Norwich Road on the outskirts of the small village of Edgefield. For many years it was an ale house selling only beer; this was served through a hatchway into a sitting area for the customers. I am pleased to inform you that things have changed dramatically since those days. The Pigs is now a well-established and very popular Gastropub.

The pub was purchased in 2006 by three well-known local individuals that were already involved in the leisure industry. Iain Wilson of the King’s Head and Byford’s at Holt, the Lavender House at Brundall proprietor Richard Hughes, and the chef Tim Abbott, joined forces to turn The Pigs into a first-class country pub serving excellent food and drink in very pleasant surroundings.

A complete refit of the kitchen was necessary and new toilets had to be built. Outdoor seating areas were also provided, as was a children’s play area that is very popular with young guests during the summer months. The ten bedrooms were also designed and equipped to a high standard with Bang and Olufsen TVs and audio equipment, beds with pocket sprung mattresses, comfortable furniture and a desk with Wi-fi availability. Three of the bedrooms were converted into Spa Rooms in June this year and feature a sauna, a drench shower, an outside bath and a fire pit.

The menu at The Pigs is varied and is British in style. Some local influence is present in the choice of dishes and the ingredients are sourced locally. Dishes from years gone by are regularly featured at The Pigs and more unusual cuts of meat are used to great effect.

Drink at The Pigs includes six locally produced ales, the pub’s own ginger beer and lemonade, local cider and speciality lagers. The wine list is comprehensive and the usual array of spirits is also available.

If you are on holiday in North Norfolk and are staying at a nearby Norfolk holiday cottage I strongly recommend this pub for your evening meals. The service is relaxed even at busy times and the atmosphere, especially when dining al fresco in the summer months, is very agreeable. This is a great pub to visit if you have a young family.
