I grew up in Norfolk and have lived and worked in the county all my life.

Cart Gap to Horsey on the forgotten coast

Continuing a journey from Happisburgh to Horsey along the Norfolk coast that took me through the rather strange settlement that is the Bush Estate. These structures, some ramshackle and others modern bungalows, are sheltered by the extensive line of sand dunes beneath which they nestle. They benefit from their close proximity to the beach – very pleasant in the summer months but when a nor-easterly gale is blowing I would imagine it is a bit like living in a settlement in Siberia.

Bacton to Happisburgh – off the tourist trail

If you like to relax on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee and one of the broadsheets, you will undoubtedly have noticed the more regular appearance of articles relating to the north coast of Norfolk. The feature writers currently seem to be having a love affair with the area of the coast between Hunstanton and Cromer. This interest has been fuelled by the soaring price of the region’s property over recent years. Due to the growing demand for pretty Norfolk cottages as second homes, particularly during the 80s boom, this area has become increasingly fashionable with the rich and famous. In contrast, the coast from Cromer to Horsey is nowhere near as popular with those searching for a second home by the sea, and the holidaymakers visit in far fewer numbers, but that was not always the case.

Can a photograph be a work of art?

Can a photograph be a work of art?

Can photography be called an art form?

I was prompted to write this article when I saw a photographer’s ad in which he described himself as a ‘camera artist’. Is photography an art form? This old chestnut has been around for a long time but is still creating lively debate. Some art critics would scoff at the proposal that photographers are artists but might well sing the praises of a particular photograph.

So the old debate ambles along in its many forms. Does monochrome photography have more artistic merit than full colour? Does the photographer have to print an image in a darkroom to qualify as an artist? (As far as I am aware Cartier-Bresson had all his prints made for him). What place does digital imagery have in the art world?

Purchasing a holiday home in Norfolk is a sound investment and a great asset. It can be used for regular family holidays and for letting, to provide a good income that will more than cover the costs of upkeep. If you are more adventurous, there are several other parts of the world that make such an investment very worthwhile.

Nuclear power station for North Norfolk

Nuclear power station for North Norfolk

The UK government’s Energy Bill is coming back to Parliament this autumn in its draft form. When it is eventually passed into law it will set the country’s energy policy for the foreseeable future. The government is pressing ahead with its policy of moving to renewable energy sources but this is looking increasingly as though it will be just a supplement to nuclear energy. The North Sea’s natural gas supplies are steadily depleting and a complete reliance on supplies from further afield in a world of political and economic uncertainty, is really unthinkable. A way in which to burn coal to generate electricity in an environmentally friendly way has as yet proved impossible to find. These factors combined indicate that building new nuclear power stations is the only option available to us if the UKs increasing energy requirements are to be met. Plans are already in the pipeline for a Sizewell C and another new station at Hinkley Point. Although some countries are at present turning away from nuclear power it is extremely likely that the increasing demand for electricity in the years ahead will force a renaissance in nuclear power generation? Is there a possibility that at some time in the future a nuclear power station will be built on the North Norfolk coast, a location that in the past was deemed suitable?
